Unmissable castles

A large number of castles, each as splendid as the next, are just a stone's throw from Coulommiers: Vaux-le-Vicomte, Blandy-Les-Tours, Fontainebleau, Chantilly, Pierrefonds... There's plenty to delight your eyes!

Vaux-le-Vicomte

Vaux-le-Vicomte

Just a 50-minute drive from Coulommiers, the Vaux-le-Vicomte castle is the largest private monument in France. Its original owner, Nicolas Fouquet, even made the Sun King jealous with the grandeur of the castle and extravagant parties that took place there. From May to October, Vaux-le-Vicomte offers a unique experience with its "Candlelit Evenings." At nightfall, 2,000 candles are lit in the garden, recreating a sumptuous atmosphere from its grand era. Towards the end of the year, "Grand Noel" delights with magical and festive decorations, as well as a sound and light show on the castle's facade.

Blandy-les-Tours

Blandy-les-Tours

Only 6 km from the Vaux-le-Vicomte castle is another wonder not to be missed: the Blandy-les-Tours castle. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, this fortress is a remarkable example of medieval military architecture, with its imposing towers, dominating ramparts, and majestic dungeon. Beyond its impressive architecture, it offers cultural and educational activities throughout the year, providing visitors with a dive into medieval history. In summer, an immersive sound and light show on the castle ramparts transports spectators to the fantastic universe of the knights.

Fontainebleau

Fontainebleau

Another must-visit, just 1 hour's drive from Coulommiers: the Fontainebleau castle and its surroundings. This castle is full of fascinating collections that rival those of Versailles. With its charming gardens, it's an ideal place for a day of strolling, a picnic break, or a boat ride on the mystical Carpes pond. Don't forget to explore the surrounding villages, among the most beautiful in France, such as Moret-sur-Loing, Barbizon, Samois-sur-Seine...

Pierrefonds

Pierrefonds

We also invite you to discover Pierrefonds, reachable with a 1-hour and 20-minute journey. Nestled on the edge of the Compiègne forest, this small town seems straight out of a fairy tale. Impossible to miss, the majestic Pierrefonds Castle proudly stands at the heart of the village. At the foot of the castle, a lake offers a bucolic setting for a relaxing stroll, a boat ride, or a gourmet meal by the water. It's a world where medieval charm harmoniously blends with the beauty of nature.

Chantilly

Chantilly

Another architectural gem worth a visit, 75 km from Coulommiers: the Chantilly Castle. Elevated amidst the waters, it elegantly combines Renaissance and Classical styles. With changing light, the castle's reflection transforms into a living spectacle. Its garden is another masterpiece by André Le Nôtre, the gardener and landscape architect who brought gardens to life for many prestigious castles like the Palace of Versailles. Before heading to Chantilly, you can make a stop to discover the old town of Senlis, where cobbled streets, beautiful old houses, Gallo-Roman walls, and the Gothic cathedral exude enchanting charm.

Versailles

Versailles

The Palace of Versailles is a 1-hour and 50-minute drive from Coulommiers. Although not very close, it's entirely feasible for a day trip. As one of the most iconic and visited sites in France, the Palace of Versailles embodies the height of French Baroque style and bears witness to significant events within the royal family and the history of France. After visiting the castle and its majestic gardens, don't forget to explore the Queen's Hamlet, a bucolic village created for Marie-Antoinette, offering a more intimate perspective on court life at that time.
